1. HIV and AIDS program implementation
With a historic focus on HIV and AIDS program implementation, HIVSA realized that addressing root causes related to gender inequality and cultural norms has become critical in the fight for an HIV-free generation. They required assistance to formulate a new vision for the organization and develop a Theory of Change (ToC) that could take a more holistic view of their initiatives and desired future direction. The project had three components:
- Research Report on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Related Initiatives: Conducting comprehensive research to understand the impact of GBV and identify effective initiatives to address it.
- ToC Workshops and Narrative Documentation: Facilitating workshops to develop a Theory of Change and documenting the narrative to guide the organization’s future strategies.
- Funding Strategy: Developing a robust strategy to secure funding for their new vision and initiatives.
2. Anglo America Foundation, Road Safety Program
The Impact Catalyst was commissioned to implement a 3-year road safety program in Limpopo, South Africa. The program included 13 projects and was implemented on behalf of Anglo American. This initiative fed into Anglo American’s Sustainable Mining Plan, specifically under the ‘Partnering for Thriving Communities’ component.
A program-level Theory of Change (ToC) was developed through a series of workshops with various diverse stakeholder groups.
This overarching ToC provided strategic direction, helping to outline the intent of the program and serving as a basis for the individual project Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) components.

The consultancy, through its South African business MG Analytics, was instrumental in developing new systems to index the social value created from Corporate Social Investment (CSI) and Social Labour Plan (SLP) projects for the mining group Sibanye Stillwater. Understanding and measuring impact is the first step towards aligning community programs and investments to systematically build resilience in communities, contributing to community stability, fostering good relationships, and ensuring a sustainable future post-mine closure.
By understanding the impact of individual programs, future program designs can be adapted to ensure a higher value return for the money spent. Knowledge is power, and evidence-based decision-making can positively influence even compliance-driven decisions, ensuring that we serve the greater good.
The Process of Creating the Index:
- Rapid Evaluations Approach: Utilized to cover multiple projects within a short timeframe, while still supporting analysis through fieldwork insights.
- Mathematical Formula Development: Created based on the Results Chain thinking inherent to Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E).
- Validation: Tested the validity of the formula results against the qualitative feedback received during fieldwork.

Working in collaboration with the Social Progress Imperative, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and Impact Catalyst, Monica Trichardt and the extended team pioneered the development of a Social Progress Index (SPI) at the ward level across the Waterberg Region in South Africa. These wards, which function as voting districts, provided a detailed and localized perspective on community wellbeing, encompassing factors such as health, education, and crime rates. This initiative was groundbreaking, requiring innovative approaches to gather indicator data, including partnerships with government bodies and the application of geospatial techniques.
The resulting index was visualized through an interactive dashboard, offering stakeholders, including Anglo American, a comprehensive understanding of the social dynamics within their operational areas. This approach not only facilitated informed decision-making but also underscored the commitment to enhancing social progress in the region.
